Simplifying Web Development: How to Serve a ReactJS Application via Django

ReactJS is a popular front-end JavaScript library for building dynamic web applications. Django, on the other hand, is a popular back-end web framework for building server-side web applications in Python. In this article, we will explain how to host a ReactJS application via Django.

Step 1: Build Your ReactJS Application

Before you can host your ReactJS application via Django, you need to build your application for production. To do this, run the following command in your terminal:

npm run build

This will generate a production-ready build of your ReactJS application in the build/ directory.

Step 2: Create a Django App

Next, create a new Django app that will serve your ReactJS application. To create a new Django app, run the following command in your terminal:

python manage.py startapp myapp

This will create a new directory called myapp in your Django project directory.

Step 3: Copy Your ReactJS Build Files to Your Django App

Now that you have built your ReactJS application and created a new Django app, it’s time to copy the build files to your Django app. To do this, create a new directory called static inside the myapp directory:

mkdir myapp/static

Then, copy the contents of the build/ directory to the static/ directory:

Step 4: Create a Django View to Serve Your ReactJS Application

In order to serve your ReactJS application via Django, you need to create a new Django view. This view should read the contents of the index.html file that is generated by the npm run build command and return it as a response.

Here’s an example view:

This URL pattern maps the root URL of your Django app (/) to the ReactAppView.

Step 6: Run Your Django Development Server

You should now be able to access your ReactJS application by visiting http://localhost:8000/ in your web browser.
